I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Family sessions that embrace a family's natural rhythms are the memories you'll want to remember twenty years from now.
No forced smiles.
No avoiding "silly faces".
No trying to get your kid to look at the camera (when they really don't want to and might feel very uncomfortable interacting with someone they don't know).
When you give your kid a chance to just be themselves and enjoy time with you, those moments yield the best photos.
Photos that capture the sitting and staring at your kiddo as they crawl around, the sliced apples, the doggo running away from little hands that pester and annoy, and the quick little walk around your apartment. All of these moments are important. And when we candidly and artistically approach your family photos as a moment worth freezing-- that's what make the most authentic and sweet family photos (this is my opinion, obviously, and if you want super duper smiley/posed family photos, go find a photographer who loves creating those kinds of photos!).
There were times during Rebekah and Buddha's casual family photo session in NYC, I took a few steps around the corner or behind a vase of flowers to really give the photos this element of candidness. I had them on the floor. On the couch. At their table. Places they frequent with their kiddos, doing things they normally do with their twins. My goal is to capture that day in the life feel of you and your family.
If you look closely at these photos, I think they portray a sweet family in their home, but I think the highlight is Rebekah and Buddha's joy and delight in their twins. The way these kids made them laugh and feel things. I loved seeing them smiling at their kids. The deep deep things parents feel when they're feeling gratitude and awe. I think we caught those things here. Also shoutout to these two for getting their kiddos milk drunk and super happy right before our session.
I hope when they look back on these in twenty years, they're reminded of the way the light used to pour into their home through their windows. The way they all sat sprawled out on that gray shag rug. I hope they can even smell the dinner cooking and that 6 month old baby smell. I hope they remember their sweet moments with their sleepy dog and the way their kids gazed up at them with smiles and curiosity. I hope they remember the chaos of the financial district, the tight streets, and the feel of carrying their kiddos through the city they love.
