I've worked many many elopements and micro-weddings in the city, and the biggest challenge I see couples face when it comes to planning logistics, is the transportation.
How do you want to get around town? Are you wanting to be efficient with your time? What gets you the best bang for you buck? Today we're going to get you started when it comes to answering "What Transportation Do We Take on our Wedding Day in New York City?"
Taxis and Car Apps can sometimes be slower than taking subways or ferries. I've sat in traffic for an hour with a couple who wanted photos all over the city, but they didn't account for the traffic in Midtown Manhattan. Traffic really depends on where you're going. You should definitely discuss with your photographer beforehand the best ways to get around the city if you're unfamiliar with it. Using a car to get from west to east of Manhattan can be a great idea. Using a car to get from Central Park to Brooklyn could take 30-40 minutes longer than taking the train.
It's all about travel time and the photos. Travel time is included in your session, so make the most of it. Most photographers include travel time into your session time, so if you're planning on traveling from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge, the travel time is built into the time you book. In my opinion, you should be getting the best bang for your buck here. Instead of hanging out in a Lyft or Uber with your photographer for 40 minutes with them unable to get many shots of you in the car, go ahead and jump on a subway train (or even a ferry) for some extra cool photos of you. Maybe you'll need a break from taking photos? Ask your photographer if riding in a car makes sense for the distance you're traveling.
3. Why wouldn't you want to get classic NYC subway photos? A photo of you with the subway blurring by?! Amazing. A photo of you kissing on a crowded subway! It's so NYC! Or, if you're getting married on a weekday, you might find yourself on an empty subway with an opportunity to take lots of photos as you travel to your next destination.
4. If you're able to walk, Wear walking shoes, bring water, and snacks! While I always request my couples wear comfortable shoes to get from Point A to Point B, I can't stress enough how important it is to have an extra bag with you to keep your photo-ready shoes in. I'd also keep water and snacks in that bag because walking Manhattan can be draining! It drains us of our energy to walk more steps than we're used to! Taxis or trains can drop you off near Central Park, but you still have to walk from the outside of Central Park to the middle (you could take a pedicab, but that's going to get expensive). Wear walking shoes and you'll feel so confident about walking to all of New York's most iconic places! If you don't want to carry a bag around the city, ask your photographer to bring an assistant to help carry items. An assistant might cost a bit more, but I've always found it's worth it to have an extra set of hands on a wedding day.
